Don't forget to invest in your health before takeoff

"Other considerations: For overseas medical emergencies, check with your health insurer about any restrictions. In general, you'll pay out of pocket initially and submit your claim when you return home. Some insurers cover emergency medical evacuation as well. If not, depending on where you're traveling, you might opt for a medical evacuation policy, such as
MedjetAssist, which costs $75 for seven days of coverage and provides a flying ambulance evacuation from any hospital back to your home city in the United States."

Insurance for emergency air evacuation can pay off
Travel agents Patricia and Robert Watson celebrated a very different kind of anniversary at a Connecticut restaurant Saturday night.
Two years ago, Patricia was evacuated from Europe to New York by air ambulance after having a stroke on a business trip with her husband. "Every night I bow to MedjetAssist, because they evacuated me and had a lot to do with my recovery," says the 59-year-old White Plains, N.Y., resident.
Alabama-based MedjetAssist is one of many companies that insure travelers for emergency air evacuations to appropriate medical facilities. For the Watsons, such coverage paid off. They paid less than $300 for annual coverage, and MedjetAssist says their London-New York air ambulance flight on a Learjet cost about $40,000.
Many business travelers head abroad without coverage, apparently believing the odds of a medical evacuation are very small. But the Dec. 26 Indian Ocean tsunami, various terrorist bombings and everyday illnesses and injuries suggest such coverage can be beneficial.
"The tsunami has highlighted the need to be more prepared," says Bradley Connor, a New York-based doctor and president of the International Society of Travel Medicine.

Adventure travelers and those with health concerns who already have sufficient overseas medical coverage might consider a plan that covers only emergency evacuation, like MedjetAssist (800/963-3538;
http://www.medjetassist.com); annual plans from $205; short-term plans are also available). The company will fly you to any hospital in the world and also cover repatriation, as long as you're at least 150 miles from home. (page 91)

An excellent supplement to travel medical insurance is the services offered by MedjetAssist, an air-ambulance company that flies members to whatever medical facility they choose if they are hospitalized on a trip and require further hospitalization. Its rules are much looser than those of insurance policies: MedjetAssist doesn't have to decide that transport is medically necessary, as insurance companies do. What's more, you can have the air ambulance take you all the way to your hometown hospital rather than to the nearest adequate medical facility, which is all you'll get with most insurers. Because it's not insurance, MedjetAssist won't pay your medical bills or to transport a companion who wants to accompany you (though if there's room in the air ambulance, it might allow someone to ride along for free). Membership costs $205 a year for travelers under 75: fees are higher for older applicants. (page 60)

You've read about Sports Illustrated model Petra Nemcova who, despite a broken pelvis, was saved by clinging eight hours to a palm tree. She's contacted private plane companies to bring her home. Cost: $150,000 plus. This inconceivable tragedy brings me to discuss the 24/7 Alabama based evacuation operation MedjetAssist. For an annual $205 membership they will send an ambulance to wherever in the world you are that is closest to an accessible landing strip. Cost? Zero. Operating since 1991, underwritten by Lloyds of London, questions can be answered by phoning 1-800-963-3538, faxing 1-800-863-3538, or logging onto MedjetAssist.com.
